Student Leadership

In my first year of teaching at St Albans Heights Primary School, I took on the responsibility of establishing a Student Representative Council (SRC). It was a great challenge and I sought a lot of assistance from colleagues within my cluster who had loads of experience with student voice programs. My philisophy on student voice developed throughout the year as I gained more insight into the power of true student leadership. I was adamant that my SRC would not be a token student council. I had two Grade 6 school captains and a female and male representative from each grade 3-6 classroom. We met fortnightly to discuss the current issues and concerns of the student population and tackle ways to resolve them. The councils achievements were great;
  • Attended a cluster run Drug Education forum which aimed to provide student with the knowledge, confidence and resources to run their own drug ed forum at school. My SRC planned and delivered a community drug ed forum in term four for students, families, and other members of the community. We were assisted greatly in this process by Dr Jason Chan, of ISIS Primary Care, Deer Park.
  • Organised and managed a disco for grade 3-6 students
  • Acted on the request for mirrors in the toilets and followed through with interactions with leadership to ensure this occurred
